Akım Metal continues to solidify its position in the industry with its expertise in metal processing and metal injection for the aerospace and defense sectors. With its R&D center established in 2011, the company has successfully transferred its 50 years of experience in the household appliances and automotive industries to the defense sector, entering 2025 with the goal of becoming a global company.
Our Product Group Manager, Necmettin Aksoy, shared insights on our future plans and industry position. According to Aksoy’s statements, Akım Metal continues its ambitious stance in the sector by executing specialized projects and manufacturing for the defense industry.
128-Motor Family Developed for the Defense Industry
Our Product Group Manager, Necmettin Aksoy, emphasized that our work in the defense industry began with industrial motors and has since expanded:
"We started our journey with permanent magnet servo motors, which we refer to as industrial motors. We aimed to be the first in Turkey to produce this family of motors, which were not manufactured domestically. We established our R&D center in 2011, and today we have nearly 80 R&D employees. We realized that industrial motors alone were not sufficient, so we integrated them with PLCs, control systems, and drivers to create a complete solution. We developed Turkey’s first servo driver and LED lighting driver entirely with local and national resources."
Noting that Akım Metal entered the defense industry between 2013 and 2014, Aksoy added, "We started this journey with requests for motors designed for weapon systems, focusing on localization and nationalization efforts. To date, we have introduced 128 different motor families to the defense industry."
Innovative Solutions for Electric Vehicle Motors
Highlighting our contribution to Turkey’s transition to electric vehicles, Aksoy shared the following details:
"We produced Turkey’s first 9-phase, 250-kilowatt, 2750 Nm torque electric vehicle motor. The concept was developed in collaboration with TEMSA, ASELSAN, and Akım Metal and is currently in use in Samsun, Konya, and Kütahya. The vehicles have reached 150,000 kilometers, and the project continues. However, there are gaps in Turkey’s electric vehicle ecosystem, particularly in battery systems and drivers, which need further development."
Developing Alternators for Aircraft Engines
Discussing our advancements in the aviation sector, Aksoy stated that we have developed alternators for aircraft engines and turbojet missile systems. He elaborated:
"We produced elevation axis motors for Altay tanks, received a design award, and completed the first 50-unit batch production. We conducted extensive research on submarine motors and are fully prepared in this area. Now, we have entered the aviation sector and developed alternators for aircraft engines. Last year, we received approvals and moved to mass production. Additionally, we have developed turbojet motor alternators for missile systems, which are also in mass production."
Contributing to the Defense Industry with CNC Lathes
Our Product Group Manager, Necmettin Aksoy, emphasized that Akım Metal plays a significant role in the defense sector with its CNC lathe production. He highlighted that the 12-axis CNC lathe, produced under our SMB brand, is currently operational at ASELSAN Konya facilities. He also mentioned our CNC exports to the U.S., Germany, and South Korea, stating:
"CNC lathe production is of great importance, especially for the defense industry. These machines are difficult to procure from abroad, so we developed them domestically, providing a valuable asset to our country. However, we still need to reach a broader market. Strengthening our marketing strategies will help us achieve this goal."
Aiming to Become a Globally Recognized Brand
Finally, Aksoy emphasized that Akım Metal aims to go beyond being merely a metal processing and machining company and is determined to become a globally recognized brand:
"Our goal is to establish Akım Metal as a globally recognized brand. We have a strong technical team, robust infrastructure, and a visionary management team to support this mission. As we enter 2025, we remain committed to our path toward becoming a global company."
